7 Ways to Gain More Twitter Followers

In recent months, Twitter has become one of the most popular social-networking sites out there. With millions of users across the world, many people are getting connected to one another. People use Twitter to talk about what they're doing, what they're feeling, etc. Others use it to share information with other users, whether it's a new TV show or a new happening restaurant, etc. Twitter, it seems, is like a blog but with only 140 characters on each post of course. And just like any blogger, a Twitter user needs an audience. So what's a Twitter user got to do to gain followers? Unless you're a celebrity who normally gains more followers than an average user, you're going to need a strategy:

1. Spread the Word.

One way to gain more followers is simply to tell others that you have a Twitter account. If you have a blog, Facebook or any other social-networking sites, post a link of your Twitter account to it. You can also put the address in your contact pages, business cards, e-mail signatures, etc.

2. Be Active.

Another way to gain more followers is to tweet regularly. The more you tweet, the more likely people will see your tweets on the Twitter public timeline and perhaps follow you then. Tweet at least once a week, and people will likely not follow you. Tweet too much, and people will not likely follow you for flooding.

3. Be Interesting.

Sure Twitter is about sharing information, but do we really need to know from your tweet that you're just brushing your teeth? No. To gain more followers, make your tweets more interesting and/or entertaining. If today was really so boring, make a quip about it, tell a joke, etc.

4. Interact.

Since Twitter users are connected to one another, why not converse with each other? If someone asks you a question, reply. You can also do the reverse - ask your followers what they think of a certain topic, etc. If you see an interesting tweet, send a tweet to that user telling him/her what you thought about it. If you have similar interests like a sports team, talk about the latest match, etc. In several cases, they'll likely follow you for conversing with them.

5. Be Informative.

A great advice from Darren Rowse of twitip*: "Tweeting on a personal level is fun and for many that's as far as it goes - but if you're interested in growing your Twitter influence you need to provide your followers (and potential followers) with value. It's the same principle as growing a blog - if you help enhance people's lives in some way they are more likely to want to track with you and read more of what you have to say. As a result your conversations should 'matter' on some level. Sure you can throw in personal tweets and have some fun with it - but unless you're providing something useful to people (information, entertainment, news, education etc) they probably won't follow you for long."

6. Be Personal.

Don't sound like a robot on Twitter. If you're going to have a feature with automatic tweets, you still need to tweet every once in awhile as yourself. Many people are put off with spam or Twitter profiles with tweets that look like spam. If you're going to need to promote something, do it but with a more personal touch. People will likely follow you and might retweet your tweet too!

7. Use What Twitter Has Given You.

Retweet is one of the things people love about Twitter. Sharing information has gotten easy because of it. And with retweeting, it helps your tweets be put out there for more users to see. If other users like the information you retweeted, they'll likely follow you. Hash tag is another popular function on Twitter, and it helps users find others with the same or similar interests as theirs. Users with the same interests tend to follow one another so this is a great way to look for new followers. Posting pictures is also popular on Twitter, and it can help start a conversation. People will likely comment on a picture if they find it interesting so post something that can wow your audience, and they'll likely follow you then.
